South of the Border | Stuff We Love | Mexico @ 11:26 AM

Read: La Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver
Love a good story? Love mexico? Love Frida?  Then you will love this book!  Fiction with a little history...had us captivated from the opening page.

Need: Mexican Handwoven Reboso - not only a beautiful scarf but we love taking it to the beach as a light weight towel!

One of our very own rebosos being handwoven on the streets of Mexico.

Listen: Searching for Sugar Man -  An extraordinary documentary about Mexican-American musician, Sixto Rodriguez.  Absolutely no explanation needed, just watch this award winning film and listen to the powerful music and you will be forever captivated.

Lust: Jai Vasicek Crosses - We just love anything with a pom pom, throw in some neon and we are yours!  These colourful and whimsical crosses are hand made by Byron Bay artist Jai Vasicek.  Available locally in Cronulla at Char Bella or online at Ahoy Trader.

Want: Moccasin Wedge - Handcafted from super soft suede, these shoes are genius...like gloves for feet!
Ridiculously good with a skinny jean, we know that these will take you from work to BBQ to bar in style - we've checked!

Watch: Frida (of course) with Selma Hayek - a visual feast,  striking and inspirational.  The amazing story of the professional and private life of the surrealist Mexican painter Frida Kahlo.

Photos we took inside Frida's amazing studio.

Visit: Taxco, Mexico's Silver Capital - We loved wondering the streets and exploring this amazing city, but the strongest feature that attracted us to Taxco is it's silver history.

Every November, Taxco organizes the world famous Silver Fair, when craftsmen, artists and silversmiths show their work and a national prize is awarded to the best silver artist.  This is a particularly impressive event and a time of true artistry!

Its red-roofed, whitewashed houses line cobble-stoned streets filled with old VW Beetles zigzagging their way past traditional hotels just like the Emilia Castillo.

Set into mountains are the most astonishing churches, painstakingly carved out of local pink sandstone.

If you haven't already gathered, we are a bit in love with all things Mexico, the rich history, colourful culture and her brilliant artists.  We hope by sharing our passion for Mexico you too will develop a soft spot for this special place.

xx The Border.
